Meher Kakalia
Meher Kakalia
Born in Karachi, in a large family, where history and tradition were cherished, Meher Kakalia love for fashion swung between hand embroidered sarees to her grandmother’s stash of stunning shoes. Meher flew very young to Europe to study finance in London, but her sparkling nature was contrasting too much with the grey atmosphere of the City: after a few years, she decided to change her life to express her incredible taste for colors and design. Her idea was to return to the roots of her culture and reinterpreted old traditions into fashion items. She sets up her own workshop in Karachi with creative craftsmen, shoe makers and embroiderers. Beside her love for color, traditional crafts and people, Meher believes in a sustainable approach to production and building a brand. She decided to work with women embroiderers with that approach and allow them to work from their home. The kings and queens of the Taj Mahal were lovers of the arts and developed this craft for their footwear. It is a chance that today Meher Kakalia’s brand can still use this craft on fashionable boots, ballerinas and sandals.
